Psalms 34: Try Him! You’ll Like Him!
This Psalm reminds me of a commercial for Life Cereal that my kids watched on TV when they were small. It was such a craze that everyone was going around saying, “Try it, You’ll like it…Hey Mikey!”
David is saying the same thing here! He’s saying, “Hey people, try God, You’ll like him.” David has no reservations about his God. He is so confident, that he invites all people to “taste and see, that the Lord is good.” In the first seven verses, David gives example after example of the good things God has done. He talks of his own experience and the experience of others. He talks about God’s supernatural interventions for His friends! In verses 8-10 David says while some creatures are not so fortunate, the man who reveres God is blessed. In verses 11-14, David says, “C’mon, I’ll teach you how to do it.” Love life, and good things and stay away from evil in thought, word, and deed.
In verse 15-22, David says if you can do that, God will be your friend forever. God hates evil, but he blesses the humble and upright more than they can hope or imagine. He delivers men from trouble, and he is near to the broken-hearted. He protects the righteous from harm, redeems the very lives of his servants so none will be condemned.
What an awesome God, huh? What do you think? Do you think David is convincing?
