United We Stand, Divided We Fall: A Different Perspective
Genesis 11: 1-9
The phrase “United we stand, divided we fall,” is familiar to almost everyone in the U.S. It shows that we value unity as well as autonomy. In God’s economy, however, it might be that united we fall and divided we do better.
In Genesis 11:1-9, we see humans again wishing they were God. So God must step in to rescue them from themselves. Scripture tells the story like this:
1 Now the whole earth used F163 the same language and the F164 same words. 2 It came about as they journeyed east, that they found a plain in the land of R251 Shinar and settled F165 there. 3 They said to one another, “Come, let us make bricks and burn them thoroughly.” And they used brick for stone, and they used tar R252 for mortar. 4 They said, “Come, let us build for ourselves a city, and a tower whose top will R253 reach into heaven, and let us make for ourselves a R254 name, otherwise we will R255 be scattered abroad over the face of the whole earth.” 5 The R256 LORD came down to see the city and the tower which the sons of men had built. 6 The LORD said, “Behold, they are one people, and they all have the R257 F166 same language. And this is what they began to do, and now nothing which they purpose to do will be impossible F167 for them. 7 “Come, let R258 Us go down and there confuse R259 their language, F168 so that they will not understand one another’s speech.” F168 8 So the LORD scattered R260 them abroad from there over the face of the whole earth; and they stopped building the city. 9 Therefore its name was called Babel, R261 F169 because there the LORD confused the language F170 of the whole earth; and from there the LORD scattered them abroad over the face of the whole earth. Now here was a case where united we stand got man into big trouble. It seems that man, again, forgot that he was dependent on God and not just on himself. Just like Adam, Cain, and the people for whom God flooded the world, it seems that man still wants to be God. Why is it that we cannot remember that? So man decides that he and his buddies will build the first sky scraper. They can go right up to heaven and dethrone God. Good Luck! What were they thinking? Did they really think that God was going to sit there and let them do that? Uh, NO! So God, probably after having a good laugh at the audacity of their actions, went down to check it out.
Of course, He wasn’t going to be defeated, but He had to do something that would let man know that He was still in charge and that He still knew better about what was good for man. So He scrambled their language. Poof, now man couldn’t even communicate with others because he couldn’t understand a word of what they were saying. Now one had to be multilingual to be understood. Taking them by surprise, God was able to scatter them throughout the world, diversifying cultures and creating nations and more people.
In one easy step, God divided them so that their united front fell. That’s the saying? United we stand, divided we fall. I guess God had a different take on that huh?
