Last Chance before Lights Out

Last Chance before Lights Out

John 8:12-30

I am always amazed at Jesus’ patience with people! It’s not a trait of mine, ask my kids. I have no patience. As I read this passage, I wanted to reach through the text and grab a hold of someone and shake them. Wake up! I would say…don’t you see that Jesus is talking to you…don’t you see?!….but they don’t. I have the advantage of a Monday morning quarterback, but it is still frustrating to watch.

Jesus is trying to help these people. He tries to tell them that they are witnessing the very thing that they have waited through Israel’s entire history for. The Messiah has come and all you can talk about is rules.

Jesus tells them He is the light of the world, and they reply, you can’t testify about yourself; you’re lying.

Jesus says He is not testifying about Himself, the Father is, and they reply, WHERE is your Father?

Jesus says “I am going away, you will die in your sin;” so they reply, “What? Is he gonna kill himself?”

Jesus keeps explaining; they keep blowing him off. If it was me, I’d say go ahead then, GO to Hell, see if I care!

BUT Jesus does care, and so He stays. He keeps explaining and responding to their foolish talk. I don’t know how He does it; how He has so much patience with us.

In this passage, Jesus is telling them He is the light of the World. He is telling them He can illuminate reality for them they can see their dreams realized if they follow Him. They can have eternal life, but just like people in darkness, they want to stay there. They don’t want to come into the light where Jesus can wash them clean of their sin. They enjoy their sin; it’s comfortable.

Jesus warns them this is their last chance. He is going back to the Father and they will not have another chance. Do you think they care? They have life all figured out their way; they don’t need someone coming in and messing things up. How dare someone come in and call Himself the Messiah! Even if He was the Messiah, He’s not doing things their way. How could He be God? God would do things their way…or would He? The people in the dark rejected the light…but those who didn’t were saved.
